TF2 Sniper Rifle by greenzaku TF2 Sniper Rifle by greenzaku
How this prop is made for my cosplay. Other than the wooden stock (made of balsa), everything is made out of scavenged and recycled junk including cardboard tubes from Spotlight - these are from the rolls of textiles.

1. Chips and can.

2. Give it the 'ol chop-chop. Then put it back together in a different way. There are plastic discs between each section so they can be glued together

3.. Wooden part. The pieces I got were actually too small, so you can see where separate pieces have been joined.

4. Joints in the stock were smoothed with light clay, more bits cobbled together to make the laser.

5. Painted and wire attached.

6. Other side. Arrow is pointing to little lever used for reloading.

7. >B^U

aaahh I have been looking all over the goddamn internet for this.

I am going to try build a sniper rifle , going after this step-by step. I have never built anything myself so it's gonna be interesting if I survive. Anyho, thanks for the quick tutorial! :D

The pieces, other than the stock, were gathered together out of dumpsters and bins, the tricky bit was actually finding a metal can of the exact dimensions. However, there are now more sizes of crisps sold in tubes than when this rifle was made, so that should be easier for now.

The rifle itself was put together in my spare time at night over a couple of days, and painted over the next two days giving time for coats to dry. I would say that the stock took the longest time because it was just hacked out of balsa with a cheap handsaw, inletted for the barrel with a stanley knife, and then filed smoother. As the pieces I had were not large enough, its had to be assumbled from multiple parts and the putty used to fill the gaps takes overnight to dry too.

How thick was the piece on the handle, or did you attach two together?

:icongreenzaku:

Its made of two pieces/planks glued side by side; with another small triangular section attached under the butt of the rifle, of the same thickness. :)

Had a question for ya mate....what color of paint did you use for the scope? from the looks of the photo it looks like Dark Green like a forest green i could be wrong and you would know the actual color to your awesome scope.

Hi, I used some forest green mixed with brown and didn't really care about proportions as it was some old paint I didn't really need to keep around much longer.

incredible  what did you use for the laser part of the rifle that the sniper uses to aim?

Its the inner cores of two spools of sewing thread, one thinner plastic one inside a wide cardboard one, and covered with a cardboard circle at the front.

this is great although it'd be great to get more detail on the parts you didnt give a "tutorial" on (trigger, bolt, scope mount, laser) I am making my own snoipah costume and might use this model for a sniper rifle (thats why I was so demanding about the detail)

When I first made this cosplay, I was back in 2009 when I had no further plans to dedicate my DA account to any particular sort of theme, let alone focus on crafts etc. Nor did I ever suspect that this rifle would end up so popular.

What I can say is that the bolt is actually just a rolled up bit of plastic sheet that fits within the barrel. Random leftover bits of balsa wood from carving out the stock worked well for the scope mount, an old pen that ran out of ink was chopped up for the thin cylindrical bit under the scope. The curved parts of the scope mount holding up the scope itself come from the butchered section of the same pringles can - that way it has the same curvature. The laser was cobbled together from more random bits including an old thread spool.

Hope this helps.

sorry but what is the thing in between the pringles can and the cardboard tube? (I have everything for a scope but that and it would help to have identified :) )

Its a metal food can. You'd need to have the diameter of the Pringles can handy and find a can of dog chow/baked beans/pickles/whatever that is slightly smaller than that. :)

wait were you talking about what was in between the pringles?

Yes, your interpretation is correct. The [???], to clarify, is a chunk of PVC piping, but on hindsight, a thick-walled cardboard tube would be just as sturdy and not so heavy.

I'm glad to be of help, but I'm not actively cosplaying at the moment due to work/travel commitments (yes, ironically I REALLY happen to live in Australia, work in the outback with dangerous animals, shoot a rifle, and travel across the country chasing contract work ><). But I'm more than happy to answer any questions or discuss making things with you even if I'm not cosplaying myself. :)
