Shungite

Shungite is a mineraloid consisting of as much as 98-100% carbon content, and is divided into further categories according to luster, ranging from bright to dull. This raw piece is bright. It is similar to jet in being black, lightweight and of biological origin; but is formed from algae in lagoonal / coastal sediment; while jet is formed from compressed land plants.

It is believed to have antibacterial and purifying properties and Peter the Great 'set up Russia's first spa in Karelia' to make use of this (source:  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shungite) and this historical precedent has continued as shungite still remains very popular for its healing properties, as evidenced by shungite New Age jewelry, water purification kits and cellphone covers sold by eastern European dealers on eBay. It is also an attractive carving stone and used to be made into black artists' pigment.
