Description
Rutile
Wadnaminga Mines, Manna Hill, South Australia, Australia
Photographed with permission from the collection of John Chivers.
Rutile, titanium dioxide, is commonly seen as a metallic, needle-like inclusion in quartz crystals. It can also form a star-like pattern (asterism) in precious stones like rubies and sapphires, forming highly sought after star rubies and star sapphires. Otherwise it is widely processed as an ore of titanium, ground to form bright white titanium dioxide pigment, and is even used in sunscreen for its ability to protect against UV-induced skin damage, according to Wikipedia.
It can form as acicular (needle-like) crystals or as larger, dark crystals like these in red, brown, black, yellow and violet. More information on rutile can be found at: [link] and [link]
