Hanksite is an unusual mineral in that in contains both carbonate as well as sulphate ions, though it is classed as a sulphate. A soft mineral (Hardness 3), it can occur as white, colourless, yellow or grey. It is also soluble in water, having formed as a result of evaporation of water carrying dissolved ions in arid environments.

I've been trying to grow crystals of this for literally *years* I just can't seem to get the proportions right. I wonder if it requires specific temperature conditions to form. (Certainly at low temperatures the sodium sulphate precipitates out.)
