Description

Fluorite – UV fluorescent
Weardale, England
(left: under normal light, right: under UV light)

Photographed with permission from the collection of John Chivers.

Fluorite is chemically calcium fluoride, and is a common mineral that often forms cubic crystals in hydrothermal veins. It can come in an extremely wide variety of colours such as blue (typical of this locale), green, pink, lilac, colourless etc. As it is soft and easily scratched (Mohs hardness 4), care should be taken when storing and handling fluorite so that it doesn’t abrade against harder stones and other objects.

Some specimens such as this one are fluorescent under UV light.

This is a great idea, lining up the two next to each other. I just wish the image on the left were brighter and sharper. The image on the right is awesome, though.
